A Statement To Our Y Community

The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette stands united with those who are protesting the killing of George Floyd as the latest fatal outrage committed against countless other black men and women across our nation. We support the drive to equity and justice and believe that Black Lives Matter.

As Dr. Martin Luther King, who was both a witness to and victim of racial hatred and violence, famously proclaimed, "The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice."  Of course that moral arc will only bend under the weight of the actions of people determined to properly reset our course. Dr. King further stated "We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny."

Therefore, at the YMCA of Columbia-Willamette we will not stand idle. We are devoted to taking the responsibility, in the form of action, to assist in eliminating racial injustice from our community. We proclaim that through our Christian principles of love, respect, honesty, responsibility and service our Y is truly FOR ALL and thus we commit to the following:

  • We will listen more closely to those whose voices have not been heard
  • We will stand up and speak out against injustices
  • We are dedicated to removing any systems or barriers that result in discrimination.
  • We will create a passionate culture of diversity and inclusion for our staff, our members and our volunteers
